Hey folks:
I recently put a new computer together, and the video care I
used is an XFX Geforce 7800 GT. The card works fine but for the life
of me I can't figure out if it is overclocked out of the box or what.
Nothing whatsoever on the box suggests that it is (I requested an
oc'ed card from the store I bought it at), but on the XFX web site,
all the GT models they list (two, which seem identical in all
respects) are listed as overclocked. What is the best way to find out
if mine is? Ken

Try Coolbits. It's a simple registry hack and can enable a "Clock
Frequency Settings" display in your Nvidia driver properties. It will
show you the current clock frequency settings and will also allow you
to change them.

Default for the nVidia reference card is 400 core and 1.0 Ghz for the
memory. It's a very rare 7800 card that varies from the nVidia reference
card. Heatsinks are usually the biggest physical difference. The other
difference is to overclock the card right from the factory using the BIOS in
the card. As others have pointed there are a variety of ways to control the
overclocking using coolbits, riva tuner and others.

Generally a 7800 GT will overclock out of the box in the range 470-490 core
and 1.15-1.18G memory. Some will get higher but this will be an exceptional
card.

Other factors involved in getting a good overclock will be your power
supply, motherboard and how well your case cooling is.

Remember overclocking is a lot like playing a slot machine

The XFX are all running faster than the reference board speeds.
