Hey guys or linux users,
I have a dual partitioned hard drive with ubuntu and windows xp. I
just recently installed a GeForce 8800 GT into the computer. It works
great with XP, but with ubuntu 7.04 linux nothing worked. Before ,
with the intergrated graphics , it seemed to work good, and with this
new graphics card , I re-installed ubuntu 7.04 and it doesnt
recongnize the geforce.
system:
cpu: amd athlon 64 5200 @ 2.6GHZ
Motherboard : asus m2a-vm (intergrated ati x1250 graphics)
1 gig of ram
160 GB HDD.
XFX GeForce 8800 GT

Update to 7.10 with dist-upgrade (see Ubuntu docs on how to do this) and
it should also update the corresponding restricted drivers set. I don't
know if the default 2d 'nv' driver can recognize the 8800GT yet, but
NVIDIA's newest Linux drivers do and I believe the latest Ubuntu
restricted driver ('nvidia' instead of 'nv') are within the last version
or two.

The documentation site is really very useful and has very clear
instructions on using either the Ubuntu repository drivers, or
installing Nvidia's own binary driver and kernel module.

For additional help, see ubuntuforums.org and any good Ubuntu wiki.

Also, just to be sure, go into your BIOS and check that the integrated
chip is completely disabled (first video is set to PCIE not PCI or
Onboard, and integrated has no RAM allocated).

You can also update to the 8.04 alpha 3/4 releases. It contains the
very latest xorg with support for everything.

Now you know why Linux is not as good as the Linux zealots would have
you believe. I've had that happen every time I change a video card in
Ubuntu. X server freaks out and will not load. You need to delete the
Nvidia drivers and go mess with the xorg.conf file or some malarkey like
that. In the end I got fed up with it as I change hardware frequently so
dumped Ubuntu and went back to XP and Vista exclusively. If you search
the Ununtu forums you will find the steps you need to take. Some of the
info you may find is outdated though and may not work. It's certainly
not as simple as uninstalling driver, install new vid card and reinstall
driver like on Windows though. Expect some Linux zealot to come along
any minute now and try to trash me for telling the truth. The truth is
that most old timer Linux users use older hardware and rarely change
their video card so they rarely see these kinds of issues. Most of them
don't need a high end 3D card and something like an old Geforce2 will
suffice to run X.
