I'm builing a system with an Asus EN8600GT/HTDP/512M. The CPU is an
Intel Q6600. My question is this:
The 8600GT does not need an extra power plug but the 8800GT does, why
is this?

The maximum power that a single PCI-e slot supplies through the bus is
nowhere near 150W. It's 75W max, with an additional 75W supplied from the
external 6 pin PCIe connector for a total of 150W. There's now an 8 pin
PCI-e connector that supplies even more power for newer power hungry cards.
A typical 8600GT card pulls in the 45-50W max range under full load. The
8600GTS requires additional power and has the standard additional PCI-e
power connector.

The 8800GT draws more power than the 8600GT. Theoretically the 8800GT,
which according to Nvidia's spec draws max 131W in 3D mode (although
XBitLabs tested it slightly lower), could draw all its power from the PCIE
bus (max 150W) but Nvidia are playing it safe by drawing extra power
directly from the PSU.
